John Whitmire is a liberal Democrat who has been in the Texas Legislature since 1972. Whitmire is running for mayor of Houston as is Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee. Former Metro Chairman, bond investor Gil Garcia is also another strong candidate. There are 18 candidates in the Houston mayoral race on November 7, 2023.
There will definitely be a runoff election because no one will be able to garner a majority in the general election. The Democrats will split their votes.
This is the reason that Whitmire has sought the support of wealthy RINOs and is mailing campaign pieces into Republican areas of Houston, trying to portray himself as a conservative.
The only notable Republican in the mayor’s race is conservative Dr. Jack Christie. Christie is a proven citywide vote getter, having won 3 citywide elections for an at-large Houston City Council position. Christie was term limited out after 2019.
By garnering 25% of the vote Christie will assuredly be in the runoff election. Christie will likely be the lead figure as conservatives coalesce behind his candidacy.
Whitmire is ranked as the 5th most liberal Democrat State Senator based upon his voting record.
Whitmire is an old white man version of Sheila Jackson Lee. Whitmire would continue the liberal policies of Sylvester Turner. Whitmire’s sister is former liberal Houston mayor Kathy Whitmire.
In 2015, Whitmire, along with Anise Parker and Sylvester Turner, supported the Houston City Bathroom ordinance which would have permitted men to use women’s bathrooms, showers and locker rooms.
Houstonians overwhelmingly defeated the Bathroom Ordinance 61-39%. Whitmire opposed the SB 6 in the 2017 Texas Senate that banned biological men in women’s bathroom.
Whitmire claims to vote his morals. Here are some of Whitmire’s votes in the Texas Senate that demonstrate how liberal Whitmire is and what his morals are.
