How can I feel better after a hysterectomy?
Dear Dr. Hotze,
I was having painful, long periods and heavy bleeding, so my doctor said I needed a hysterectomy. He said that would take care of my problems and I’d feel better, but after my surgery, I feel worse! Everything in my body has changed. I’m irritable, tired, I have headaches, hot flashes and I feel horrible. I saw an article on your website that said women still need progesterone after a hysterectomy, but my doctor said I don’t – only Premarin. What should I do? Thank you.
– Colleen S.
Thank you for your question, Colleen. Many women are told by their doctor that having a hysterectomy will solve their health issues related to their uterus and ovaries. However, often women are unpleasantly surprised at how bad they really feel after the surgery. They don’t feel like themselves anymore. They have symptoms such as headaches or migraines, anxiety, night sweats, weight gain, sleeplessness, moodiness, and lack of energy, just to name a few.
Why does this happen? The immediate decline in hormones. By removing the uterus and ovaries, a woman immediately has a decline in her estrogen, progesterone and testosterone levels. Please note that even if the ovaries are left in, the blood supply to them is still compromised, so you can still have symptoms of menopause and hormone decline.
Conventional doctors will prescribe Premarin – which is derived from pregnant mare urine – to treat symptoms such as hot flashes and night sweats. While this would be great for horses, it is not meant for women. Premarin has many potent estrogen hormones not found in humans. Taking it can lead to a whole host of negative symptoms and consequences, including cancer.
The natural solution is to restore what is missing with bioidentical hormones. Bioidentical hormones are identical to the hormones made by your body. Therefore, they can help resolve your symptoms and help you feel good again.

Do You Really Need A Hysterectomy?
Often a hysterectomy is recommended to correct problems caused by a hormone decline and imbalance, such as heavy periods or uterine fibroids. These can be caused by estrogen dominance, or a progesterone deficiency. You need to ask your doctor why you are having these symptoms in the first place. Why remove your uterus and/or ovaries if all you really need to do is replace the hormones that are missing?
