Harris County Officials Sue Tax Assessor Over Voter Roll Maintenance

Three Harris County incumbents have filed a lawsuit against Tax Assessor-Collector Ann Harris Bennett, alleging she has not removed ineligible voters from the rolls. 

The plaintiffs—Steven Hotze, Joseph Trahan, and Caroline Kane—claim the list of registered voters includes individuals disqualified for various reasons, such as having moved out of the county, being deceased, or being registered at commercial addresses where they do not live, according to court documents.

Bennett, who oversees voter registration in Harris County, has not been seen at her office in nearly four years. Public records obtained by The Chronicle indicate she has not swiped her badge to enter any county facility since 2020, despite drawing a salary of $171,000 annually. In 2019, she swiped her badge 92 times, while in 2020, she did so only seven times and has not done so at all since then.

Additionally, Bennett has been largely inactive online, sending just 18 emails since January. Her office is responsible for collecting property taxes, processing vehicle registrations, and managing voter registration records for over 2.5 million registered voters in Harris County.

Harris County Attorney Christian Menefee labeled the Republican activists involved in the lawsuit as “MAGA EXTREMISTS.”
