Texas Judge Dismisses Lawsuit by 117 Houston Methodist Hospital Employees

A federal judge in Texas dismissed a lawsuit on Saturday, June 12, brought by 117 Houston Methodist hospital employees who sought to block the hospital’s controversial COVID-19 vaccine mandate.

Jared Woodfill, who is the lawyer representing the plaintiffs in the suit, told Katy Christian Magazine the following, “Methodist Hospital has forgotten about the sacrifice my clients made during the heart of the pandemic.”

“Many of the folks I represent were on the front lines during the height of the pandemic and as a result, contracted COVID-19. In return for their sacrifice, Methodist has awarded them a pink slip. Additionally, recent studies show that individuals who have previously contracted COVID-19 should not be injected with the experimental vaccine. We will take this case to the United States Supreme Court,” he stated. 

In the four-page opinion released by U.S. District Judge Lynn Hughes, she stated that firing the employees as a result of their refusal to take the COVID-19 shots would not amount to wrongful termination. Under Texas law, an employee is considered to have been wrongfully terminated if he or she was fired solely for refusing to perform an illegal act.

In a statement released to different media outlets, Marc Boom, President and CEO of Houston Methodist, stated the following, “We can now put this behind us and continue our focus on unparalleled safety, quality, service, and innovation. Our employees and physicians made their decisions for our patients, who are always at the center of everything we do. They have fulfilled their sacred obligation as health care workers, and we couldn’t ask for a more dedicated, caring, and talented team.”

Houston Methodist announced the vaccination mandate for more than 25,000 of its employees on April 1. But many healthcare workers at Houston Methodist who chose not to get a vaccine or were not fully vaccinated by the deadline, were suspended for 14 days without pay just last week.

Jennifer Bridges, who is the lead plaintiff in the case, said many hospital staff have seen severe adverse reactions from patients once they had received the COVID-19 vaccine, and cases of people contracting COVID-19 after being fully vaccinated.

“So, it does not protect you from getting or spreading COVID and the likelihood of a severe adverse reaction is happening a lot right now, so your risk versus the benefits just don’t weigh out. We are not comfortable because we don’t want to risk our lives or our future over getting this vaccine that doesn’t even work,” she continued.

“Most of us have already had COVID so this vaccine does absolutely no good because we already have our own antibodies for it,” she concluded.
