A Unique Urgent Care Option: Care With Prayer

Have you ever had a doctor who not only treated your physical symptoms, but who also prayed for healing with you?

Zion Urgent Care Clinic is unique in that it embraces the Mind-Body-Spirit philosophy and attempts to explain and address every illness from the whole body, encompassing approach. The clinic even has a prayer room, and the general waiting room has continuous, prayerful and meditative music playing in the background.

Dr. Tewodros (Teddy) Teketel explained, “We at Zion believe in holistic medicine. We believe the spiritual self is always involved and should be addressed if possible during every illness. We have talked about spiritual health and when needed even prayed with many patients, and we haven’t yet found any one patient who didn’t feel better or who didn’t appreciate the prayer time.”

Opened in September, 2019, Zion provides comprehensive health care for all ages, Monday through Saturday, 9:00 am to 9:00 pm. Services include examination by a board certified doctor for Illnesses and injuries, examination for Workers Compensation cases and driver’s licenses, and school and sport entry examinations. The clinic has on-site laboratory services including rapid tests, Covid-19 tests, blood work for diabetes, and cholesterol testing. Even X-rays and steroid injections for joint and muscular pain are available, covering a wide range of services for both internal and external medical needs.

The clinic is run by Dr. Teketel, who has practiced medicine for 20+ years. He earned his Medical Doctorate in Ethiopia and completed public health and Infectious disease trainings in Belgium. After six years working for Doctors Without Borders in various Asian and African countries, he moved to the U.S. in 2008 and completed his Internal Medicine residency at Alameda Health System in California.

“By the plan of God and together with my wife, we were able to open Zion Urgent Care where we attempt to bring prayer (as spiritual health) as part of caring for the sick,” he said.

“We provide a wide range of services but one thing we want to grow is praying for or with patients. This is understandably unusual in an Urgent Care setting but this, we believe, is the calling for Zion Clinic.”

In addition to in-clinic services, Zion provides telemedicine service so patients who can’t come to the clinic (or who don’t want to due to Covid), can see the doctor through Zoom-like video meetings. Minor illnesses can be diagnosed virtually and patients can secure needed prescriptions without ever leaving their homes.

Many wonder how an Urgent Care differs from a trip to the emergency room. Teketel explained, “Unless a patient is having a life-threatening condition like a heart attack or stroke, most other urgent health care needs can be met at an Urgent Care clinic, usually for at least 10 times less cost and no waiting. Urgent Care is covered through most insurances for copays less than $50, unlike emergency rooms where the ER doctor’s copay alone is at least $250. In addition, ER visits usually come with extensive testing and imaging that can lead to copays in the thousands.”

But I will restore you to health and heal your wounds,’ declares the LORD, ‘because you are called an outcast, Zion for whom no one cares.’ Jeremaiah 30:17
