City of Houston Proclamation for re:MIND

On April 3rd, 2018, Mayor Sylvester Turner and Council Member Jack Christie presented a Proclamation by the City of Houston to honor re:MIND for the organization’s outstanding work in Greater Houston and surrounding areas including Katy and Fort Bend communities. The re:MIND organization provides free support groups to adolescents and adults who are dealing with depression and bipolar disorder. There are over 80 support groups meeting weekly including 25 school groups at the middle school and high school levels. Joe Gorczyca serves as Board Chairman of re:MIND for 2018. In addition, he facilitates a support group at Second Baptist Church for individuals who are dealing with depression and anxiety. Joe shared, “I am very encouraged by increased public awareness related to mental disorders. However, there is still much misunderstanding and stigma that exists. Often, mental disorders are considered the ‘invisible illness’ because individuals may try to hide how they are feeling or just don’t want to talk about it.”

In the U.S., over 20 percent of adults will experience some type of mental health episode every year. Unfortunately, only one-third of individuals in need actually seek treatment. However, for those who get treatment, over 75 percent show some improvement. As a country, we have over 40,000 suicides annually – including over 800 in the Greater Houston area. Fortunately, we are recognizing the critical need to provide treatment at early onset of mental health issues. An important principle is to understand that ‘illness is illness’ – no matter if it is physical or mental.

Re:mind focus on mental health treatment

City of Houston Proclamation for re:MIND. When we are not well, we must seek treatment. However, proper diagnosis and treatment of mental illness is more difficult in many cases. God has made each of us to be unique; it is quite miraculous. Our brains are incredibly complex and quite fragile. We are all susceptible to both genetic and environmental factors that may affect our mental health. Just as we need to seek the help of medical doctors for physical illness, we need to seek the help of mental health professionals (psychiatrists, psychologists, counselors) when we experience symptoms of mental illness. Jesus gave us insight to how we are made in Mark 12:30 when he instructs us to “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all our strength.” We experience life emotionally, spiritually, mentally, and physically. All dimensions of our being are interdependent and our wellness depends on taking care of ourselves in a holistic manner.

No matter how difficult our problems become, we must never give up hope. In Philippians 4:13, we receive encouragement by knowing that “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” God is always there for us. He loves us unconditionally. Remember – there is always hope! For more information about mental health resources, you may contact Joe at or call 281.814.8934.
